COLUMBIA - Shirley Barry Stiglbauer, 85, passed away Friday, December 18, 2020. Born January 5, 1935 in Birmingham, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Mary Williams Mullins and Ernest Augustine Mullins. Shirley spent her childhood in Birmingham and Gainesville, GA.
After moving to Columbia she attended Lower Richland and Dreher High Schools. Shirley married John “Johnny” Joseph Barry Jr., on August 15, 1952 and they were married 24 years until his death in February of 1977. Their marriage was blessed with three children. On December 14, 1985 she married Frank Stiglbauer and blending their families gave them 10 children! They were married 23 years until his death in 2008. Shirley, better known as Mimi, loved their 10 children one and all. But sweeter than children are grandchildren and they had 24!
Shirley was always active in her church. From singing in the choir and teaching Sunday School to being a past-chair of the Walsh Guild and volunteering with the Respite program at St. Joseph’s. She was a meticulous bookkeeper and took pride in her profession. She worked for some great companies and made amazing friends over the years. Mimi loved her family, old movies, Andre’ Bocelli and anything sweet.
The family would like to extend their appreciation for the loving and outstanding caregivers at Presbyterian Community where she spent her final years. She made many friends and tried to participate in activities provided at Presbyterian. Being isolated for the past nine months from others was not good for Shirley or any of the other residents. Presbyterian did an exceptional job of keeping the residents engaged in activities and connected with their families. After taking a fall and needing surgery she never got back to her old self.
In addition to her parents and spouses, she was also predeceased by her brother John Augustine Mullins. Surviving are her brother, Paul Mullins; children, Debbie Summers (Bud), John Barry III, Michele Dove (Ashley), Steve Stiglbauer (Rose), KC Stiglbauer (Jeanne), Richard Stiglbauer (Daphne), Paul Stiglbauer, John Stiglbauer (Anna), Kurt Stiglbauer (Amanda) and Karolyn Stone (Cullen). Mimi was ever so proud of her 24 grandchildren. She and Frank proudly attended many ballgames, dance recitals and graduations. With 24 grandchildren came 11 greatgrands whom she loved through pictures proudly displayed in her room at Presbyterian. All she ever wanted was to hug them. Shirley would want all to know that family is precious and never take it for granted. Spend time together, take care of one another, read your Bible every day and pray for each other.
The family will hold a private gathering to celebrate her life. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. No flowers please, but memorials can be made to Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Road, Columbia, SC 29201. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
