Thomas Burnell King

“Bert” was the son of the late Delton T. and Maggie C. King of Loris, SC. He graduated from Draughon’s Business College, attended The University of South Carolina and was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was the founder and owner of Columbia Realty & Insurance Company, Inc. and was commonly known to family, friends and the public as “Ring Bert King.” Mr. King was the past President of the Lower Richland Ruritan Club, a charter member and founder of James H. Hammond Academy (Hammond School) where he also served on the Board of Directors for 20 years; was also on the Board of Directors, Y.M.C.A. and served as Campaign Chairman For Partners With Youth. He loved the outdoors, particularly fishing and dove hunting, and was a Partner of North Edisto Farms, and “Huntmaster” of the Pelion Dove Club. He was a longtime member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, on committees for Together We Build, chairman of the Stewardship Committee, and Deacon. “Bert” enjoyed traveling with the Love of His Life, Nancy. Together they traveled all across the United States and abroad. He was also an avid gardener and farmer.

Mr. King had a great love and devotion for family - to “Bert” family was EVERYTHING. He often cried for seemingly no reason whatsoever, but that clearly showed his compassionate heart for not only his family, but also for his friends and general acquaintances as well. Everybody loved “Bert.” But more importantly, and even above family, Bert’s true and honest love of God and his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior was also clearly worn on his shoulders. Bert’s Faith always showed.

He is survived by his faithful and loving wife, Nancy, of 68 years of marriage; his devoted daughters, Kathy (Jeff) Peckham and Donna (Jeff) DuPre; grandsons, Andrew (Hannah) Peckham, Sarah Nan (Javier) DuPre, and Jonathan Peckham; great-granddaughters, Emma Caroline and Lainey Peckham. He was predeceased by one sister and one brother, and is survived by sisters, Allene Able, Iris Huggins, Maxine Johnson, Margaret Lee, Gloria Reaves, and one brother, Carroll King.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Kilbourne Park Baptist Church of Columbia, SC. Mr. King was a man of great faith and strength, and has left a lasting legacy. The family would also like to convey a special thank you to all who have cared for, sent cards, meals and prayed fervently for Mr. King and the King family.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 21, 2021, in the Kilbourne Park Baptist Church Sanctuary with visitation one hour prior. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
