COLUMBIA - Vicki Nichols Young, 66, of Columbia, went home to be with Jesus on Thursday, March 22, 2018 after a long battle with Posterior Cortical Atrophy or “Benson’s Syndrome”, a rare form of Dementia. She was born in Columbia, S.C. on June 3, 1951 to the late Frederick “Nick” Emerson Nichols and Grace Anderson Nichols both of Columbia. She graduated from AC Flora High School and attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia. She married James “Bo” Hopkins Young III of Eastover in 1981. She was a faithful and proud member of First Baptist Church for more than 35 years and worked as the Church receptionist before retiring in 2010.
Vicki had a big sense of humor and delighted in making people laugh. She radiated joy and had a heart for helping others. She served faithfully at First Baptist church for many years. She worked in the Preschool and Married Adult ministries before serving as church receptionist. She enjoyed volunteering as House Manager for shows at Town Theater, getaways to New York City and the Smoky Mountains with her family and cheering on the Clemson Tigers. She always put others before herself, especially her family. Vicki never met a stranger and had a gift for making people smile. Even at her worst in her illness she was still making those around her smile. Vicki was very proud of her children and despite her disease she never forgot them.
Surviving are her husband, Bo Young of Eastover, S.C.; her children and their spouses, Nicholas Taylor Young (Marissa) of Lugoff, S.C. and Grace “McKenna” Carter (Darrell) of Blythewood, S.C.; her stepson, James “Joey” Hopkins Young IV (Jody) of Eastover, S.C.; and her five grandchildren, Karleigh, Emily, Rease, Jase and Grant. Surviving also are her in-laws, Jimmie and Freida Young of Eastover. Vicki also leaves behind Lillian “Betty” Green, her compassionate and loving caregiver for more than 2 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert Horace Nichols of Augusta, GA.
Vicki had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and we celebrate that she has been made whole again in His loving arms! In her Bible her family found where she wrote, “Death has been defeated. There is rejoicing in the Cemetery!” Praise be to God for a life well lived!
A Celebration of Vicki’s life will take place in the Boyce Chapel at First Baptist Church of Columbia on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. followed by a reception in the Ellis Hall where the family will receive friends. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
