

CONCORD - David B. Schartner, Major, 78, US Army, Ret., passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Epsom HealthCare Center surrounded by his family. He was born July 13, 1937, in Wakefield, Rhode Island. He was a graduate of Moses Brown and the University of Rhode Island with a Masters of Civil Engineering. He was a 21 year U.S. Army veteran and served in Viet Nam.
He leaves his wife Virginia (Schultz) Schartner, four children and seven grandchildren; D. Bruce Schartner (wife Rowena, children Alec, Jarrett and Ryan), Dee-Ann S. Decker (husband John, daughter Morgan), Steven A. Schartner (son Robert) and Elizabeth A. Schalk (husband Brian children Samantha and Ethan), two step-sons Matthew Combs (wife Emily) and Thomas Combs. He also leaves his brother Albert, sister-in-law Kathleen, in-laws Marilyn & Brian Shepard, Linda & William Caine, Robert & Mary Ann Wolfe; cousin’s Richard, Nancy, Kathy & Norman Schartner of Schartner Farms, Rhode Island. David was pre-deceased by his mother Dorothy (Vining) Schartner, Kilton & father Albert C. Schartner of Wakefield Rhode Island & adoptive parents Mable & Edward Linker of North Providence Rhode Island. He also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones.
David loved spending his summers at Bear Island on Lake Winnipesaukee. He and his family starting camping there 40 years ago and spent as much time as he could enjoying the lake. After moving to Weare, New Hampshire in 1972 his family took up skiing and spent many winters at Pat's Peak in Henniker. He also enjoyed reading, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and walking his beloved dogs; Snoopy, Misty, Sandy, Max & JAG.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, Jan.8, from 4 to 7 at St. Paul’s Church, 21 Centre St., Concord, NH 03301. A celebration of David’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Church, Saturday, Jan. 9, at 11 am.
Internment with full Military Honors will be held Monday, Jan. 11 at the Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul’s Church, Food Pantry, 21 Centre Street, Concord, NH or Epsom HealthCare Center, Eldercare scholarship fund, 901 Suncook Valley Highway, Epsom, NH 03234. Arrangements are entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord.
