Dr. John V. Cabibi passed away Saturday May 18, 2024, with his family by his side, following an unexpected illness. He was a spry 81 years old, born October 20, 1942, to John F. J. Cabibi and Virginia A. Serio in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up there alongside his five brothers and sisters. While he lived the last 50 years of his life in New Hampshire, his New Orleans and Sicilian roots were deep, shaping his love of good food, music, hats, community and adventure.
This love drove him to perfect the art of bread baking which he shared with his grandchildren and all those around him. He believed that life should be lived, and loved to laugh or take on a project of any kind. He was an avid fisherman, kayaker, and photographer and particularly enjoyed when he could do all three in a single afternoon with his partner, Theresa. He found beauty and wonder in the world around him, and while he had a strong relationship to God, he found power and wisdom in exploring other spiritual practices.
He was endlessly curious, a self-defined autodidactic polymath with an unsatiated desire to learn and share knowledge with others. This led him to Louisiana State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree and then to University of Southern Mississippi, where he earned a PhD in psychology. He taught at Loyola University before transitioning to clinical psychology where he spent most of his career. He believed in fairness and justice and was an active participant in both the New Hampshire Psychological Association (NHPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) where he worked to improve access to behavioral health care. His tireless work in the field won him the 2013 Psychologist of the Year Award from the NHPA and the 2013 Karl F. Heiser Presidential Award for Advocacy from the APA.
He is survived by his partner Theresa Neves, his children Bridget Cabibi-Wilkin, Ryan Hutchins-Cabibi (Janeen), Taryn Finnessey (Michael), and Maria Hutchins-Cabibi. Eight grandchildren, Matthew, Alitza, Zak, Isaac, Tivon, Ezra, Wyatt and Keenan; and four of his siblings Alice Schmidt, Roxanne Gerber, Virginia Cabibi and Wayne Cabibi. He is predeceased by his brother Frank Anthony Cabibi.
Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be held May 24th at St. Paul's Church in Concord, NH at 10:30 a.m.; in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to The Friendly Kitchen where he was a longtime volunteer. Bennett Funeral Home of Concord, NH is taking care of arrangements. Bennett Funeral Home in Concord, NH is taking care of arrangements.
