He was raised in Bow and attended Concord High School where he lettered in football and was a top notch hurdler and three times All State pole vaulter in track and field. He later became captain of the track team his junior year. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years prior to attending Tilton prep school, University of New Hampshire, then graduating from Burdett Business College in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a long term member of the Plausawa Valley County Club (now Pembroke Pines) and later served as president for four years. He later became a member of the Loudon Country Club.

He also served on the board for the Concord Group Insurance Companies for many years. He then worked for Concord General Mutual Insurance Company for forty-four years before retiring in 1992 as vice president.
An avid bird hunter, he enjoyed hunting grouse and woodcock in N.H. and southern Maine along with trips to hunt quail in South Carolina and Georgia with his beloved English pointer, Pete.
