Glenn was born August 15, 1920 to the late Homer Eugene Sipe and Adelia Turner Sipe of Catawba County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Boggs Sipe, who passed away in 1957; his second wife, Connie Austin Sipe, who passed in 2010; sons, Rev. G. Wayne Sipe and Kenneth E. Sipe; brother, John Sipe; sisters, Dorothy Finger, Hazel Huffman, and Mildred Sipe; and grandson, Brian Sipe.
Glenn was born during the Depression, the oldest child of six. Understanding hard work and using the gifts that God had given him, he was a pioneer in many areas. Starting out in a one room school next to St. James Lutheran Church in Newton, he later attended Balls Creek School. He was a proud Marine serving during WWII. Glenn was a man of very strong faith, believing much in the power of prayer. He had worshiped at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church since 1939. Glenn later established his own business, Glenn W. Sipe & Sons, Inc., in 1965. He was one of the founding members and first president of the NC Mansonry Contractors Association. In 2012, he was honored as one of only four contractors in North America to be inducted into the Masonry Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Masonry Hall-of-Fame. That same year he was honored by the NCMCA with an award named for him, the Glenn W. Sipe Presidential Service Award. Glenn was an avid sportsman and lifetime member of the NRA. He was the last surviving charter member of the Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club. He was taught and believe in the values of hard work and respect. He came from a great generation whose many values are being lost today. Glenn will be greatly missed by family and friends.
Left to cherish his memories are Steven Sipe and wife, Beverly, of Conover, and Randy Sipe and wife, Annette, of Greenville, NC; daughters-in-law, Patsy Sipe of Conover and Emily Sipe of Dayton, OH; sister, Sue Kirkley and husband, Bob, of Charlotte; grandchildren, Karen Eckard, Jeff Sipe, Hollie Baker, Julie Sipe, Christopher Sipe, Nathaniel Sipe, Michelle Sipe, Susan Brown, Cindy Whisenant and Peter Blum; 14 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A service of celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover. Reverend Scott Bollinger will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with a Marine Corps League honor guard.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2014 at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, 4420 County Home Road, Conover, North Carolina 28613.
