

Born September 7, 1923 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Cephas Alexander Cloninger and Ruby Setzer Cloninger. Mr. Cloninger was a lifelong member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the board, chairman of the Trustees and in numerous church offices, and he was an active member of the senior citizens group. Miles was a WWII veteran. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1942 – 1945 in the south Pacific flying 32 combat missions as an engineer and gunner. Staff Sargent Cloninger’s medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medals with Silver Oak Leaf Cluster, 4 Bronze Battle Stars, Presidential Citation medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and the Good Conduct medal.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years Eunice Hilton Cloninger and one brother C.A. Cloninger JR.
Survivors include his son Alan Cloninger and wife Karen of Maiden; daughters Kaye Cloninger of Mount Holly, Gaye Hoke and husband Johnny of Conover; brothers Calvin Cloninger of John’s Island, SC, Clayton Cloninger of Chester VA; sister Josephine Raudenbush of Joplin, MO. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren Jackie Lowdermilk, Joni Boone, Adam Cloninger, Beth Rodgers and Erin Hubbard; Great Grandchildren Harper Boone and Jessica Crooks. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Claremont. Pastor Dennis Marshal will officiate and burial will follow in Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 am to 11:45 am on Tuesday prior to the service.
