

Thomas “Larry” Matthews Sr., age 71, of Catawba, went home to be with his Lord on October 21, 2013 at home after a 14 month courageous battle with Lung Cancer. Larry was born November 13, 1941 to the late Fred Flake and Helen Head Matthews. Larry was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Catawba, NC and retired from Carolina Glove with more than 30 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Marcella Matthews Busbin and one brother, Fred Wayne Matthews, Sr.
Surviving is his wife of 43 years, Jean Johnstone Matthews, of the home; three children, daughter, Tracey Matthews Sipe and husband, Charles, of Maiden; son, Earl Allen Bumgarner and his wife, Jessica of Claremont; son, Thomas Larry Matthews Jr. and wife, Linda, of Newton; four grandchildren, Nicholas Sipe and wife, Brooke, of Gastonia, Randi Sipe Sims and husband, Mike, of Burlington, Micheal Bumgarner and wife, Tanya, of Connelly Springs, and Nicholas Bumgarner of Claremont; four great-grandchildren, Landon Bumgarner, Nixon Sipe, Kristin Sims and Blythe Sipe; sister-in-law, Donna Matthews, of Catawba; brother-in-law, Charles Busbin, of Morganton, Georgia; sister-in-law, Paula Lancaster and husband, Ron, of Conover, brother-in-law, Paul Johnstone and wife, Ann, of Rougemont, NC.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Greg Alms and Rev. Dennis Bennett officiating. Burial will follow at Providence Cemetery in Catawba, NC.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 2:45 p.m. on Thursday prior to the service at the church.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Nicholas Sipe, Wayne Matthews, Jeff Matthews, David Johnstone, Micheal Bumgarner, and Nicholas Bumgarner.
