William Eugene Gilbert

William Eugene Gilbert, age 93 of Claremont, passed away on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at Sherrills Ford Hospice House. Born July 17, 1928 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Franklin C. Gilbert and Virginia Moser Gilbert.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by son William Rodney Gilbert; brothers Farrell Gilbert, Don Gilbert and sister Lila Kuhnert.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Loretta Henry Gilbert. In addition to Loretta, William is survived by daughter Rhonda and husband Stanley Wood of Gaffney SC; grandchildren Justin Gilbert, Brandon Gilbert, Abby W. and husband Tyler Elliott, Lucas Wood and daughter-in-law Carol Whitener Gilbert.

Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather who never met a stranger. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Claremont. As an Army veteran he served during the Korean Conflict. Bill graduated from Newton-Conover High School and Lenoir-Rhyne College with a BA Degree in Chemistry. After retiring as a sales representative for Reichhold Chemicals, he worked at Lowe’s Home Improvement. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, feeding the deer and driving his golf cart around the neighborhood greeting his friends.

A service will be Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at 11:00 am at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Claremont. Rev. Heather Langan will be officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Marks Lutheran Cemetery in Claremont.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Carolina Caring, 3975 Robinson Rd, Newton NC 28658 or St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 3216 W. Main St, Claremont, 28610.

The Gilbert family appreciates the wonderful and compassionate care that the staff of Sherrills Ford Hospice House gave to Bill.
