ADELAIDE LOUISE PETTIT MYERS, age 85, of Willis, died peacefully Wednesday, September 21, 2011 surrounded by loved ones. Born August 24, 1926 in Houston, she was the second of six children of Harry and Doris Pettit.
Ada’s life was marked by her faith in Christ and her commitment to her family and loved ones. She was a truly wonderful person with a pure heart, and the lives of all those who knew her were made richer by having been graced by her love and sweetness.
She met her husband Billy Myers when they were both teenagers and attended Jefferson Davis High School. He joined the Navy in World War II and Adelaide went into training to be an Army nurse and planned to follow him into service of the country. She graduated from Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. By then the war had ended, Billy came home from overseas, and they married in 1947.
Adelaide and Billy were members of Park Temple Baptist Church and later Long Point Baptist Church, where she was active as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher and advisor to Girls Auxiliary. She also served for many years as the school nurse for the Long Point Baptist School.
After moving to Willis in 1991 she became a beloved fixture at the First Baptist Church of Willis, where the children would unfailingly run up to hug her and all the older kids would come to greet her. She was also a regular volunteer at the Conroe Regional Hospital for ten years.
Adelaide loved to travel with Billy and other family members, and visited Russia, Europe, the Middle East, India, Israel, and other far-flung places around the world. But her favorite trips were to visit her grandchildren who are spread throughout the country and the family reunions where all her children and grandchildren gathered in places such as Duck, N.C.; Akumal, Mexico; Wimberly, Texas; Quebec, Canada; Lake Taho; Florida; and Hawaii. And her grandchildren loved to come visit their Nannie as she was always up for a game of cards or monopoly or a trip to Astroworld. Although few people may know this, she was a skilled player of the Pacman video game.
She is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Billy Myers of Willis; son Stephan Myers and his wife, Susan, of Auburn, Maine; daughter Janice Femal and her husband Daniel of Mandeville, Louisiana; daughter Rita Webb and her husband Clarke, of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; eight grandchildren, Lucas Myers of Portland, Maine, Rachel Myers of New York City, and John Myers of Lewiston, Maine; Matthew Femal of Tampa, Florida and Marcus Femal of Falls Church,Virginia; and Benjamin Webb, Nathaniel Webb and Joshua Webb of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; two great grandchildren, Iris Myers and Turner Femal; three brothers, Harry Pettit, Jr. and Ralph Pettit of Houston, and Arthur Pettit of Deer Park; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister Doris Moloney and her brother Bobby Pettit.
