Carl was born on December 28, 1934, in Pratt, Kansas, to James Paul Roberts and Mary Belle Thompson. The youngest of nine children, Carl grew up surrounded by the warmth, humor, and closeness that comes from a large family—a foundation that shaped the man he became.
In 1957, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy, proudly serving a four-year term. During his service, he met Barbara Lichliter, whom he married in 1960. With their marriage, Carl lovingly stepped into the role of stepfather to Debora, Helen, and Nancy, and in 1963 they welcomed their daughter, Carla.
In 2006, Carl began a new chapter in Texas when he married Pat and relocated from Baltimore. Together, they built a life filled with companionship, laughter, and community. Their home often served as the gathering place for cheerful happy hours shared with Pat’s sons-in-law, Lee and Greg—moments Carl truly cherished.
Carl and Pat were enthusiastic travelers who filled their years with memorable adventures. They made regular trips to Kansas to visit both of their families, traveled to Baltimore to spend time with his daughters, and embarked on unforgettable journeys to Alaska, Ireland, and Yellowstone. Wherever they went, they brought humor, curiosity, and a genuine joy for experiencing life together.
At home, Carl enjoyed simple pleasures that brought him great contentment—fishing, watching birds from the back porch, and playing cards with friends. He and Pat were deeply involved in their community through Senior Pals and the YMCA, traveling with these groups and forming meaningful friendships. For more than a decade, they also volunteered with Interfaith of The Woodlands, driving seniors in need and embodying kindness through their service.
Carl will be remembered for his gentle spirit, his devotion to family, and his unwavering faith. His life was rich with love, adventure, and purpose, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Carl is survived by his wife, Patricia; daughters, Debora (Bob), Helen (Leon), Nancy (Arnie), Carla (Bob); five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents James and Mary; siblings, Merle, James, Erma, Lula, Vada, Howard, Mary, Johnnie; and his first wife, Barbara.
