She graduated from Coldspring High School in 1961, where she was an active child and participated in many school activities including Basketball. After graduation, she began her career as a cook for various establishments in Huntsville and Bay City. Upon returning to Huntsville, Janice became a Kitchen Manager for Holiday Inn for many years. While working as a Kitchen Manger, she helped employ many family members and friends. Janice became a traveling CNA where she would remain for over 20 years upon her retirement. In 1988, Janice was united in marriage to Akbar N Shabazz, where they were happily married for over 30 years.
In the early 70s Janice became a member of Northside Church of Christ in Huntsville, Tx.
Janice was an active member and served many years as the Outer Gate Keeper for Heroines of Jericho, PHA of Texas and its jurisdiction. She was also a member of the Brackens Fellowship Club.
Janice was a beacon of light to those around her. Her selflessness knew no bounds; she dedicated her life to caring for others, offering a helping hand without hesitation and a shoulder to lean on in times of need. Her compassion knew no limits, and her kindness touched countless souls. A force to be reckoned with, Janice was known for her no-nonsense attitude and her quick wit. Her humor brought joy to every room she entered, filling the air with laughter and warmth. Her sassy demeanor added a spark to her interactions, making her a truly unforgettable presence in the lives of those she encountered.
Janice will always be remembered for her kindness, loving heart, and her willingness to help anyone in need. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and was well known for her Sweet Potato Pies. Janice was a people person and greeted everyone with a welcoming smile.
On Friday, February 9, 2024, in The Woodlands, Texas, Janice peacefully departed this life, surrounded by her daughters. Awaiting Janice in heaven with our Lord are her loving husband, her parents; her brothers Clarence Agnew Jr, Roy Agnew, Windell Agnew; her sisters Shirley Darden, Joyce Roundtree; her daughter Rhonda Mosley; great-grandson: Robert Earl Nellums III.
Janice leaves to continue her Legacy, her devoted children: Janice O’Guin(Michael Sr), Shirley Kamau, Vickey Shaffer(Jerry), Ira “Keke” Mosley, Janiece Burns, Rabiah Shabazz, and Akbar Shabazz II. Sisters: Emma Loings, Gladys Agnew, Belma Clark(William), Pelesteen Johnson, Canary Robinson, Peggy Pace( Dennis). Father in Law: Omar Shabazz; Brother in Law: Derrick Williams, Bernard Williams; Sister in Law: Donna Al Mansour(Herbert), Chandra Giggins, Deborah Glenn(Robert), Rhonda Murray. Grandchildren: Derreka Shelton, Robert Nellums (Unique), Michael O’Guin Jr( Linda), Spence Shaffer, James Kamau (Brianna), Jeremy Shaffer, Jhanae O’Guin, Jonathan Kamau, Jahliece Mosley, Jasmine Shaffer, Jeremy Kamau, Andylynne Crawford, Britney Mosley, Brianna Mosley, Madison Shabazz, Larry Houston Jr, Daliyah Shabazz, Faria Shabazz; twelve great- grandchildren, God Children: Frank York, Roslyn Richards(Randy), Rochelle Harrison, Ella Teamer, Cynthia Johnson, Freddie Ray Johnson, Allyson Kelley; Special Friend: Sulton Muhammad and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A visitation for Etta will be held Saturday, February 17, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 322 Horace Smith Rd., Huntsville, Texas 77320, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 AM.
Etta will be laid to rest in Northside Cemetery, 99 Martin Luther King Drive, Huntsville, Texas 77320.
