Gene was a graduate of Midwest City High School, Oklahoma University, and Central State College, obtaining degrees in sociology and physics. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Originally employed as a field engineer for Hughes Aircraft, Gene managed government programs at various Air Force bases, and later held the position of Gulf Coast manager of Marine Systems for Hughes Aircraft in New Orleans, LA prior to his retirement to the Houston area in 1987.
Gene was a man of integrity. His word was as good as any written contract. He sought neither popularity nor approval and although he expected a lot from others, it was no more than he himself was willing to give. He will be remembered as a generous and loving husband, father, and brother, and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Emily; daughters, Valli Cheatham and husband John; Amy Mendoza and husband Daniel; grandchildren: Dr. Lauren Blume, Clinton Blume, and Amanda, Gregory, and Vivian Mendoza; sister, Carol Hurst; nephews: Dr. Mont Hurst and Derek Hurst; brother, Michael Vloedman and wife Ginny; and niece, Anna Winslow. He was preceded in death by his brother Jerry.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, April 7, 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City.
