Gary Eugene Mahaffey passed away in Conroe, Texas on February 19, 2024. He was born on May 16,1953 to Frank E. and Ellen M. (Gunn) Mahaffey. He was preceded in his death by his parents and infant sister, Ardith Ann.
Gary attended school in Edmond, Oklahoma, Sullivan, Missouri and Casper, Wyoming. He graduated from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper and The University of Arkansas at Little Rock with a degree in Criminal Justice. He served as a Military Police Officer in the Arkansas National Guard and was honorably discharged in November 1973.
Gary served as a uniformed member of the Little Rock Police Department where he advanced to detective. After several years with them, he was selected to be a United States Secret Service Agent. He began his career with them at the Field Office in Jackson, Mississippi. He then became part of the George Bush, Sr. Vice Presidential Detail in Washington, DC. He transferred to the Miami, Florida Field Office for several years, followed by another transfer to the Oklahoma Field office until he became the Resident Agent in Charge at the Shreveport field office where he retired from the Secret Service after twenty years.
He began a new career with ExxonMobil Global Security in Houston, Texas. He was able to travel the world and made friends all over the globe. He was with them until January, 2021 when he retired after twenty years.
After retiring, he transferred his love of horses and the special needs population by volunteering at the Joy Ride Center Therapeutic Riding Center in Magnolia, Texas. It was one of his greatest honors to not only assist those riders each week, but to also serve on their Board of Directors. He also enjoyed assisting New Danville’s thrift store, Jazzy Junque by creating the volunteer calendar each month. He coached Special Olympic basketball, bowling and swimming with the Warriors of the Woodlands.
Gary is survived by his wife, Connie, sister Gena Mahaffey Menhusen, daughter Kristen, son Brenton and daughter in law, Hannah. He was thrilled to know he was going to become a Grandfather in July of this year.
A visitation for Gary will be held Monday, February 26, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Road, Conroe, TX 77303. A funeral service will occur Monday, February 26, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, 801 Teas Road, Conroe, TX 77303. A graveside will occur Monday, February 26, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 3:30 PM in Garden Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either the Joy Ride Therapeutic Riding Center, 29550 Tudor Way, Magnolia, Texas 77355 or New Danville, 10951 Shepard Hill Road, Willis, Texas 77318.
