Hilda Gray Everett, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, peacefully passed away on May 5, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on December 30, 1949, in Morehead City, North Carolina, to Samuel and Lillie Everett. Hilda's life was a testament to resilience, love, and faith.
Hilda's journey began in the rural landscapes of North Carolina, where she cultivated her love for gardening and learned the value of hard work on the family farm. These early experiences instilled in her a deep connection to the land and a passion for nurturing life.
Later in life, Hilda relocated to Southeast Texas before settling in The Woodlands, Texas, where she established her cherished home. Her backyard garden became a sanctuary, where she lovingly tended to her garden. Just weeks before her passing, Hilda found herself in her element, surrounded by the warmth of her kitchen. With a sense of joy and purpose, she lovingly shared her treasured homemade strawberry jam recipe, passing down a piece of her heart to her granddaughter and great-granddaughter, who stood by her side, soaking in the wisdom and love of generations past. A talented cook, Hilda ensured that her kitchen was always filled with the aroma of delicious meals prepared with love, which she passed on to her son, Jason. She made it clear that he would inherit all her recipes since Wanda didn’t quite inherit her mother’s fondness for cooking. No guest ever departed Hilda’s home with an empty stomach, willingly or otherwise!
Christmas held a special place in Hilda's heart. She joyously celebrated the holiday by baking a cake for Jesus' birthday, lighting a candle, and gathering her children and grandchildren to sing and rejoice for the birth of our Savior. She also led the charge in coordinating Christmas game night in which she gave away too much money to the winning grandchildren (and losers when no one was watching).
Despite humble beginnings, Hilda built a life rich in love, laughter, and faith. Her greatest achievement was her unwavering devotion to her faith in Christ. She found solace and community in her local church, where she formed lasting friendships and grew in her spiritual journey.
Hilda's unwavering faith provided her with comfort and peace as she faced her final days. She embraced the promise of her heavenly reward with grace and courage, leaving behind a legacy of love and devotion.
Hilda is preceded in death by her loving parents, her cherished son, Danny Ferguson, her three sisters, four brothers, as well as her son-in-law, Troy Ekdahl. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Wanda Ekdahl of Willis, TX, her son, her ‘Baby J’, Jason Wood and wife Danielle, of China, TX, her sister, Faye Hughes, and many nieces and nephews. Hilda leaves behind a legacy embraced by seven adoring grandchildren: Katlynn Kovar, Garrett Ekdahl, Amanda Ferguson, Grant Ferguson, J.C. Wood, Lillie Wood, and Jaxson Wood, alongside her precious great-granddaughter, Lyla Kovar.
Though she may no longer be with us in body, Hilda's spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered for her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith.
