James was born on March 18, 1938, in Marlin, Texas, to Chester and Myrtle Sanders. The youngest of three siblings, he grew up learning the value of hard work, something that defined his life. James worked at Spring Carpets for 27 years and didn’t retire until the age of 77, a testament to his dedication and strong work ethic.
He found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially time spent at the lake checking trot lines with his brother Calvin and watching the Houston Astros whenever he had the chance.
Known by many names (Jim, Jake, J.W., and lovingly “Poppy” to his grandchildren) James was most cherished as “Jimmy” to the love of his life, Judy Evelyn Sanders. For 68 years, James and Judy shared a marriage rooted in patience, devotion, and unwavering love. In her final days, James’ tireless care and selflessness stood as a quiet but powerful testament to a love most people only hope to experience.
As a father of four to Preston, Gina, Chester, and Janie, James poured his heart into his children. He instilled in them the values of resilience, integrity, and hard work, always leading by example and putting family first. His wisdom and steady presence guided them through life’s challenges.
James was a proud and devoted grandfather, affectionately known as “Poppy” to PJ, Amber, Ashley, Aaron, Chester Jr., Melissa, Jake, B, and Kelsey. He treasured his role as a grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, showering his family with affection, care, and timeless stories. He was a constant presence in their lives, faithfully attending sporting events, school functions, weddings, birthdays, and countless other special moments.
James was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Judy Evelyn Sanders; his parents, Chester and Myrtle Sanders; his brother, Calvin Sanders; his son, Preston Sanders; grandsons Preston Sanders Jr. (PJ) and Aaron Mullins; great-grandchildren Brianna, John Trevor, Mackenzie, and Raven; and his son-in-law, Bob Read.
He is survived by his sister, Joyce Hansche; his daughters Gina Mullins (Marvin) and Janie Read; his son Chester Sanders (Taigi); his daughter-in-law Rosetta Sanders; his grandchildren Amber, Ashley, Chester Jr., Melissa, Jake, B, and Kelsey; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
James Willis Sanders will be forever remembered for his loving heart, unwavering devotion to his family, and his infectious laugh that could light up any room.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, April 18, at 2:00 p.m. at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas.
