Layola Jean Vaughan passed away on March 14th, 2024. She was born in Johnstown, PA, on November 23rd, 1938, the youngest child of John Miller and Anna Rager. As much as she loved her Aunt Layola, she went by Jean her entire life.
After graduating from West Chester State Teachers College in 1961, Jean became a physical education teacher, where she met the love of her life, David Charles Vaughan. They married in 1963 and raised four children together: David Jr., John Winston, Lance Patrick, and Thomas Michael.
The Vaughan clan lived on both coasts and in multiple states throughout the years. In 1985, "Dave and Jean" settled in their adopted hometown of Houston, Texas. No matter where Jean lived, whether in Johnstown, the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, or Houston, she made lifelong friends with whom she stayed in touch until her death.
She was notoriously kind and generous. To describe how much so would sound like hyperbole to anyone who did not know her. It seemed like she took care of everyone at some point when they needed it. She didn't know another way. It was near-impossible to get her to say a harsh word about anyone, even though her sister-in-spirit Rilene tried many times to get her to do so.
In the years since Dave died in 2017, she spent her time doing the four things she loved most: slots, cruises, making friends, and putting her feet up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She excelled at all of them.
Jean passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. Her four sons, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and close friends were there. There is simply no telling how many people's lives she touched and improved just by knowing her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, David Charles Vaughan, her parents, John and Anna Miller, and her brothers, John and George Miller.
She will be deeply missed, remembered, and celebrated by her sons, her grandchildren, Tiffani, Carrie, Taylor, Brooke, Anna, Austin, Bryan, and Carrington, and her great-grandchildren, Veida, Finley, Wesley, William, Vera, Arlo, Grayson and Charli. There are also her nieces and nephews, whom she loved deeply, her close friends, Rilene, Jan, Lee, and just too many more to mention.
In her later years, she became known as Grammy, a title she adored. She leaves us all with a profound sense of gratitude for our time with her. We were blessed to have her in our lives.
Jean originally asked to forgo a service but admitted that she had made so many friends since that decision that it didn't seem right not to do something. A private gathering of friends and family will be held to do the one thing she rarely did: make Jean Vaughan the center of attention.
