Ken and Cindy’s love story began on a blind date in September 1969, when both were freshmen at Florida College in Temple Terrace, Florida. Though not a fairy-tale beginning, their relationship grew into a marriage, sealed on June 2, 1972, and marked by more than five decades of unwavering devotion, partnership, and faith in God’s Word.
Ken began his career as a gospel preacher after training at the Floral Heights church of Christ in Wichita Falls. He served full-time for 10 years with congregations in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Cookeville, Tennessee. While in Cookeville, he studied part-time at Tennessee Tech University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1982.
That milestone marked a turning point, as Ken and Cindy pursued his lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian. At age 32, with two young children by his side, Ken entered the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville. He graduated in 1985 with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, proud to be a Tennessee Volunteer.
Ken’s career took him through mixed-animal and emergency practice in Texas before, in 1994, he founded Champion Wood Animal Hospital in Spring. It was truly a family endeavor, with Cindy, Danny, and Jenn each contributing to its growth. Dr. O, as many affectionately called him, was known for his gentle compassion and meticulous care—qualities that blessed thousands of pets and their families until his retirement in 2022.
Beyond his profession, Ken loved tending his garden and traveling on cruises with Cindy and friends. Yet his greatest joy came from his family. To his grandchildren and great-grandson, “PopPop” was the source of corny jokes, funny stories, and steadfast love.
Above all, Ken was a servant of God. His deep biblical knowledge and love for the truth made him a trusted teacher, preacher, and shepherd. He served as an elder of the Kleinwood church of Christ for 20 years, and later at the Woodland Hills church of Christ in Conroe during his retirement. Ken has fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith. He leaves behind a legacy of love, devotion, and hope in Christ.
