Margaret Elizabeth Travis was born in Starkville, Mississippi, on November 18, 1925, to Robert Edwin Williams and Leila Martin Williams. She was the youngest of four children, with three older brothers: John, Eustace, and Robert.
Margaret was a lifelong member of the Baptist church, beginning with the First Baptist Church just a block from her childhood home. Wherever life took her, she always found a Baptist church to call home.
In 1946, following the end of World War II, young men returned to Mississippi State College. On the first day of class, Margaret met Clyde Travis. They married just a few months later, on June 19, 1946.
In 1949, Margaret and Clyde moved to Beaumont, Texas, where they raised five children: Susan, Johnny, Billy, Linda, and Tommy. In 1971, the family relocated to Conroe, Texas.
Margaret was a devoted wife and mother. She taught her daughters and their friends to sew, embroider, and cook. She was known for her generosity—always ready to prepare an extra plate for a hungry neighbor child or bake a pie from our freshly picked blackberries. She never missed a school event and welcomed all new neighbors with a homemade apple pie.
Margaret enjoyed a wide range of hobbies that reflected her creativity and love for nature. She was a talented painter, especially known for her delicate work painting china and creating stained glass pieces. Her artistic touch brought beauty into the lives of those around her. She also loved bird watching, often spending quiet mornings observing the birds in her garden. Whether she was quilting, gardening, or reading novels, Margaret found joy in the simple pleasures of life and shared that joy generously.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, her beloved husband of 50 years, Clyde Travis, her son Billy, and her daughter Linda.
She is survived by her daughter Susan and husband Terry Highsmith; her sons John Travis and Tommy Thomas; her grandchildren Daniel Collins, Leslie Llado and partner James Sanders, Travis Llado, Bill Travis and wife Angel, Marlon Travis and wife Elizabeth, Sierra Travis; and her great-grandchildren Kaiden Garza and Lily Travis.
Margaret will be remembered for her warmth, kindness, and unwavering love for her family and community.
