Louis Westmoreland, beloved husband, father, grandfather, professor and friend, left this earth for his heavenly home on July 5, 2017, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Louis was born to Elsie and Percy Westmoreland on November 15, 1940, in Madisonville, Texas. He grew up in Normangee, Texas, experiencing what he called the most wonderful childhood a boy could have. He started helping his dad in the family grocery business at the age of nine, and he never lost the work ethic instilled in him as a boy. He played all of the sports available to him, and even played freshman baseball at Baylor University. After he completed Baylor, he married Katherine Herndon, a fellow student he met at Baylor. He then completed a master’s degree at Sam Houston, spent a year at A&M working on PhD, and began his teaching career at San Jacinto College. As a longtime, greatly admired and respected professor, Louis touched so many students. Although he always taught anatomy and microbiology, he often mentioned that he would love to teach history, and was always trying to teach his grandchildren important historical dates and events. As a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Conroe, Louis enjoyed working with the greeter and usher ministries. He was a member of the personnel committee and an active member of the Uplifter’s class. Louis and Kathy had a loving, devoted fifty-two years together. He was the absolute kindest, most supportive husband, and his unconditional love and care for Kathy extended in every way to his children, grandchildren, and his beloved dogs, Max and Annie. Louis was preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Elsie Westmoreland of Normangee, and his grandparents, Percy and Rachel Westmoreland of Madisonville and Mac Leon and May Bennett of Normangee. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his daughter Julie Westmoreland of Conroe, and her children Reagan and Matthew, his son Greg Westmoreland and his wife Kristi of Austin, and their sons Will, Mark and Thomas, and his son Jim Westmoreland of Conroe, and his children Cole, Jackson, Brady and Aubrey. He is survived by one sister, Carole Martin and her husband Ken of Normangee and their sons Kevin, Brian and Brad and their families. He is also survived by several nieces, cousins and other extended family members.
In addition to teaching and mentoring his students, Louis always worked in the grocery store in Normangee. After leaving it to Brookshire Brothers he continued to visit the store ever week, wishing he could still work there. He will be so greatly missed by so many. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at 11:00am at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe, Texas with Pastor Jeff Berger officiating. Burial will take place in Hopewell Cemetery in Normangee, Texas at 3:00pm. You are invited to view our webpage and leave written tributes to the family at cashnerconroe.com
