Kayla filled her days reading and making friendships. She was known to spend days reading her Mills and Boon novels and devouring any books she could get her hands on.
She attended Palmdale Primary School in her earlier years. She sat the Common Entrance Exam and was accepted to The Government High School, where she made friendships that have lasted through the years.
After high school, she was gainfully employed at Lowe's Pharmacy. She was trained by Ms. Hellen Rubenstein to become a makeup artist. She then began to pursue a career in the beauty industry, ultimately becoming a nail technician—a skill that would serve her well for years to come.
In 1983, she welcomed her first baby boy, Kyle Brown, and the following year, Kyro Brown. They filled her home and heart with lots of love and smiles.
She fell in love with George Smith, and on July 31, 1999, they were married. George was ever the doting husband to his wife and a father figure to her sons. They were happy together as a family until God called him home in 2007.
In 2021, she welcomed her first granddaughter, Phoenix Brown. Kali Brown would follow soon after.
She served her God with all her strength and might throughout the course of her life. She became active in her church, Trinity City of Praise. She served her God in many ministries, including Prayer and Children's Ministry. Evangelism was important to her, and she shared her love of God everywhere she went. Her family constantly joked about how she watched so much TBN that the logo was burned onto the screen. It was visible whether the TV was on or off. Just before Covid-19, she became a certified Chaplain, working with the Princess Margaret Hospital's team. She began to worship at Evangelistic Temple within the past two years, joining the congregation online faithfully for both 8:30 and 11:00 services. She even wore her 'Revive Us Again' T-Shirt every T-Shirt Sunday.
Kayla has always been a lifelong learner. Every year, there was a new certification or program opportunity to work in another ministry. She earned a bachelor's in Christian Counselling and a Master's in Divinity—all over the age of 40. She was part of the first Youth Workers Certification Cohort organized by the Ministry of Youth in partnership with the College of the Bahamas.
Family and friends were always important to Kayla. She made it a point to catch up with family and friends. She was always available to talk and listen. She was part of a prayer line and offered Christian counseling to many daily. Family dinners were always a priority, and she brought her famous potato salad—often the only item her brother Jeffrey would eat. She brought laughter and fun to every event.
She began to feel ill during the latter part of 2022. Her health began to decline, and in May 2023, she sought medical intervention at Broward Health North General Hospital in Coral Springs, Florida. The surgery was successful, and she began to heal and made plans to return home to Nassau. On July 11, 2023, while being attended to by her son Kyle, she became unresponsive. Despite the medical assistance given, she joined her Lord and Savior at 6:34 pm that evening.
