Maria Victoria, or “Chiflis” as her grandchildren lovingly called her, was born on September 21, 1943 to Jorge Anselmo Daza and Maria del Carmen Daza Diaz in Bogota, Colombia. Third oldest of 12 siblings, she always cared for her loved ones. As a little child she went to boarding school, and she often shared stories of bittersweet memories of her time spent there. In Bogota’s neighborhood of Quiroga, she met the love of her life, Alfonso. They dated for 8 years and 8 months before getting married in 1967, and went on to having three children, Ana Victoria, Alfonso and Edme. They would have celebrated 57 years of marriage this year.
She devoted her life to her husband and children, magically being able of doing it all. From taking care of her home, driving her children to multiple activities, making delicious meals, traveling around the world by her husband’s side, and caring for her parents and her nieces and nephews, to acting as plumber or electrician if needed!
Maria Victoria loved all her family, and specially her role of grandmother to her six grandchildren, Nicholas, Emily, Sara Sofia, Julian, Stefano and Sebastian. She had the fortune to be present during the birth of five of them. She gave them her heart and enjoyed every single moment they shared. As her nickname reflects, she bonded with them by going along with their games and silliness which cultivated an unmeasurable loving relationship.
Maria Victoria enjoyed sports, specially tennis and soccer, she loved owls, drawing, and making Christmas crafts. She patiently and carefully handmade Christmas stockings for all her grandchildren. She was a dare devil and loved rollercoasters. Family was her priority and she loved the time spent with her immediate family, her sons and daughter in-law, many siblings, nephews and nieces, and close friends. She was devoted to the Virgin Mary and the Holy Souls in Purgatory, and she held on to her faith to find peace in joy and pain.
A memorial will be held at Kraeer Funeral Home on May 16th, from 5pm to 9pm. Her funeral will be celebrated at Mary Help of Christians the next day at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Maria Victoria’s honor to Mary Help of Christian’s Diaper Bank, an organization whose mission is to help struggling mothers and babies.
