Marie Poux, 90, died peacefully in the company of her children in Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after having suffered a fall a week earlier. Her home was in Tamarac, Florida.
Born in Camp-Perrin, Haiti, on February 11, 1928, her father, Antoine, was a Haitian Consulate to Cuba, and her mother, Eline, was homemaker to 10 children, of which Marie was the 6th.
Marie was born into a family of opera enthusiasts and classical music lovers. Her paternal grandmother, Miriella Ferrer, was a Haitian pianist who taught and performed in the Caribbean around the turn of the 19th century. Marie's father regularly regaled his daughter with stories of opera performances he attended during his diplomatic trips to Paris. Similarly, she passed on her love of music and opera to her children.
Shortly after marrying Melcourt Poux in April, 1953, the couple immigrated to the United States, where her husband had recently completed his studies at the Hampton Institute.
After living briefly in New York City, the young couple made their home in Akron, Ohio, where they began raising 5 children. Marie lost her husband to lymphoma in 1971, and several years thereafter moved the family to Atlanta, Georgia, where she continued to raise her children as a single parent.
Marie took great pride in having educated five children who hold 8 degrees amongst them and who enjoy successful professional careers.
After graduating from the Akron City Hospital School of Practical Nursing, Marie went on to Clayton State University School of Nursing, where she completed her RN and subsequently passed the National Council Licensure Examination.
Marie enjoyed a rewarding and fulfilling nursing career that spanned some three decades at Akron City Hospital and South Fulton Medical Center in Georgia. She moved to Florida after retiring.
Marie is survived by her five children; Claude (San Jose, California), Danielle (Alexandria, Virginia), Melcourt (Charlotte, North Carolina), Guy (Boulder, Colorado) and Max (Fort Lauderdale, Florida); and two brothers Gerard and Robert Ferrer; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A visitation and wake service will take place on Monday, October 22, from 7- 9:30 p.m. at the Kraeer Funeral Home, located at 1655 University Drive, Coral Springs, FL, 33071.
A funeral mass will be held for Marie on Tuesday, October 23 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Malachy Catholic Church, located at 6200 N. University Drive in Tamarac. This will be immediately followed by her entombment at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery at 1500 South SR 7, North Lauderdale, FL. Marie was a sweet soul who will be missed by many.
