Douglas John Baker

He is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, of 53 years, son Byron of Crawford Bay, BC, daughter Shawna (Wes) Rumpel of Comox, BC, grandsons Joshua and Luke Rumpel of Comox, BC, brothers: Alan (Helen) of Victoria, BC, Greg (Linda ) of Creston, BC, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Doug was predeceased by his Father and Mother, Edward “Ted” and Agnes (once named Longest Living Original Resident of Nelson) Baker of Nelson, BC.

Doug was born and spent the majority of his life in Nelson, BC until moving to the Comox Valley in 2016. He developed a lifelong love for trains and worked for the CP Rail train yard at a young age before starting with the Ministry of Transportation and Highways.

Doug was an avid golfer, jokester and had a love for the ocean. He enjoyed many walks near the water sharing stories and talking with old and new friends. He was a kind-hearted, loving man who enjoyed the lighter side of life. Doug adored his grandsons and would often watch them play their sports sometimes cheering loudly from the stands with praise and encouragement. His extraordinary patience and wonderful sense of humour helped him get through his last few months. He will be forever loved and greatly missed.

A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Tyler Falk, Dr. Janice McLaughlin and the team at Island Health Home Care Palliative Services of the Comox Valley who were caring and compassionate.

Donations can be made in Doug’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A family gathering in celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
