It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Irene “Renee” Daisey (Hobson) Urquhart, a dearly beloved wife, mother, grandmother, step-grandmother, step-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.
Irene passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, at Ocean Front Village, holding her husband's hand. She was 94 years old.
She is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Alex; her children, Douglas, Donald (Kathy), and Diane (Jack); her granddaughter, Ashley; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Born on May 2, 1932, in Edmonton, Alberta, Irene lived a life defined by love, kindness, faith, and unwavering devotion to her family. She spent her early years growing up on a farm in Vermillion, Alberta then the family moved to Surrey where she completed her high school years. Irene pursued a career in psychiatric nursing before moving to the Comox Valley, where she met the love of her life. She shared an extraordinary 72-year marriage with Alexander Desmond Urquhart—a partnership built on friendship, commitment, devotion, and enduring love. With Irene's passing, she was the last surviving member of her family's generation.
A woman of deep Christian faith, Irene's trust in God guided her throughout her life. She found great joy in baking, canning, and creating a warm and welcoming home for family and friends. She generously volunteered with Al-Anon, becoming a beacon of hope for many people and families affected by alcoholism. Through her compassion, acceptance, and unwavering support, she helped others find strength during some of life's most difficult times.
Irene's wisdom, gentle spirit, quiet strength, and wonderful sense of humour will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to three angels—Rita, Maria, and Donna—whose loving care allowed Irene to remain in the comfort of her home. They also extend sincere thanks to the dedicated care team and Nurse Practitioner Jen at Ocean Front Village, as well as special appreciation to Dr. Winter for her extraordinary care, compassion, and kindness throughout Irene's life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Piercy's Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honour Irene's memory by reaching out to someone in need or reconnecting with an old friend you haven't seen in a while.
Forever loved. Forever remembered. We miss you, Mom.
