Anita was born to Elmer and Madeline Smith (Brown) on November 10, 1952 in Chicago Heights, IL. She graduated from St. Ann Catholic School in 1967 and Thornton Fractional South Township High School in 1971. She received an Associate of Arts Degree from Thornton Junior College, choosing accounting as her profession.
Anita learned to love traveling from the numerous family vacations and trips they took around the United States.
Friends were a very important part of Anita's life. While working at one accounting company, she met Dolores, who became one of her lifelong friends. With other friends, she enjoyed watching Bears games, Wheel of Fortune, and other game shows on TV, playing Yahtzee, dancing, and listening to music.
Anita and her favorite aunt, Aunt Mary Alice, loved to follow and listen to a one-man band, Cousin Nevada, in Naples, FL. Working as a hostess at the Quest restaurant, Anita made more friends, even golfing with them on a team organized by her longtime friend, Sabena.
At the Towne Centre, Anita loved doing word search, playing cards, and Bingo. Her love of Bingo began as a volunteer, calling games at St. James Church in Salk Village.
She is survived by her sisters, Pamela L. Thiel, April L. Smith, and Christine Redfern (Smith); her only surviving aunt, Mary Alice; niece, Michelle Smith and her children, Tyler, Justin, Cody, and Hailey. Others include, Denise (Thiel) Walstra and her husband Pete; Ronda (Thiel) Leon and son, Nicholas, and husband, Dave (deceased); Sandy (Thiel) Noe and her husband, Ted, and son, TJ and family; as well as many other nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Anita is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Madeline Smith; sister, Cynthia J. Smith; and her favorite brother-in-law, Charlie Thiel.
Anita was a loving helper and volunteer, enjoying giving rather than receiving. We celebrate the life of Anita. She brought joy to all who knew her. God has called home another Angel! Amen!
A committal service will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, on Thursday, March 5th at 1:00 pm in the cemetery chapel.
Anita will always and forever be in our hearts, minds, and prayers. Her light will continue to shine on her family and friends, although they will miss her presence by their side.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.ChapelLawnFunerals.com for the Smith family.
