Obituary of Duane Oliver Smith
On Saturday, March 27th, not only did the world lose Duane Smith, a great man, but the Smith family lost their big hugger, their comedian, their teacher, their protector and provider, their superman and their rock. Duane was so many things to his family and friends. His passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts and is felt deep within our souls. He was a loving and caring husband to his wife, Linda Smith, for 50 years. Their 50 year journey included many laughs, some tears, challenges and successes. The memories of their marriage are ones we all, and especially Linda, will hold close, remember, and celebrate. Together Linda and Duane created a family tree that they should be proud of. Their family tree started with his two children, Tim Smith (Sara Ashman Smith) and Tonya Negele (Smith). Early on, his children thought that Duane was the strongest and hardest working father ever. He seemed invincible; he was their superman. Duane was always also the unaware teacher. He was always sharing his knowledge of cars, engines, carpentry, electrical, hunting and fishing to his children (and anyone else that was interested). As the tree grew to four grandchildren and four great grandchildren, so did Duane’s reach and heart. Duane was also a protective and doting “papa” to his grandchildren and “great papa” to his great grandchildren. In the twilight of Duane’s life, he found his purpose in his grandchildren and their children.. Duane and Linda created such strong roots for their family tree to grow upon. This tree will branch and stretch in ways that we can’t imagine, but ultimately this tree will benefit everyone that it touches and provide comfort in the shade of its leaves. He will forever be missed and not forgotten. We will always love you, Duane, pops, dad, Du, papa.." A Visitation for Duane will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2021 at 11:00 am and Memorial service will be at 12:00 pm at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 8178 Cline Avenue Crown Point, IN 46307 Pastor Bob Officiating He will be laid to rest at Chapel Lawn and Memorial Gardens.
