

Howard was born in East Chicago, Indiana to the late Lave Gustafson, of Sweden, and Edith (Aldrin) Gustafson. Growing up, Howard attended Hammond High School and later Purdue University where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering (1952).
In 1952, Howard joined the U.S. Army where he worked on missile guidance systems. He achieved the Corporal ranking and was honorably discharged in 1954.
Howard worked as an engineer in power generation and power transmission at NIPSCO. He retired after 24 years of service. Howard also worked part-time as a professional land surveyor and professional civil engineer in Indiana and Illinois, helping design a number of buildings and roads in Saint John and surrounding cities.
Howard was an avid member of Christ Lutheran Church in Hammond, Indiana.
In his spare time, he enjoyed, golf, dancing, boating, photography, walking and bicycling.
Howard married Diane Layl Wiley in Anderson, Indiana; and are now reunited in Heaven. He is also preceded in death by his sister Myrna.
Left in his memory are his children David and Stephen Gustafson, grandchildren Ryan and Dylan, and sister-in-laws Nancy Garrett, Nina Cline, and Nanette Cox; as well as numerous friends and relatives.
