On July 18th 2021, John R. Costa of Munster, IN passed away at home, surrounded by his family, after a long struggle with cancer. He was 71 years old and was born in South Bend, IN to the late John and Bernice (Przybyl) Costa. He is survived by his wife Judy of 50 years, his children John (Jennifer) Costa, Michelle (Allan) Charny, his grandchildren Ashlee and Aaron Costa, his sister Rosalie (Thom) Modesitt, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Lawrence and his sister Judith Costa.
John was a retired machinist and had worked as the department head of the machine and instrument shop, in the chemistry department, at the University of Illinois at Chicago for 28 years. In this time he made many types of instruments and apparatus that supported research and the advancement of science.
John loved restoring cars, fishing and camping. He loved his grandchildren and was adored by them. Most of all John never hesitated to lend a hand to someone in need, showing by example what it means to serve others before himself.
Family and friends may visit with the family on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home - 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307 from 10 AM - 12PM, with a funeral service beginning at 12:00 PM to celebrate his life with Rev. Frank Torres officiating. Burial to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
