

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 57 years, Alfred Thiel; her parents; Roy and Elizabeth Anderson; her siblings, Eleanore Csmereka, Melvin Anderson, and Betty Hull; and her great-grandson, Cody Rosenthal.
Velma is lovingly remembered by her children: Diane (Don) Obert, Larry Thiel and Karen (Doug) Cozart. She was a proud grandmother to Tina (Tom) Munroe, Donald (Sheri) Obert, Anthony (Mariana) Thiel, Justin (Aris) Cozart, Dawn (Matt) Knipp, and Jeremy (Kristin) Cozart; a cherished great-grandmother to 16 great-grandchildren; and a dear sister to Kenneth (Shirley) Anderson and Carol Minich.
Velma faithfully served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years, touching countless young lives with her kindness and wisdom. She had a creative spirit and found joy in writing poetry and corresponding with her many pen pals. She loved baking for her family, crocheting treasured keepsakes, drawing and sketching, and dancing with her husband at the VFW. Her warmth, talent, and unwavering faith were evident in all she did.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Operation Smile or to Trinity Cares at Trinity Lutheran Church in Crown Point.
Velma’s legacy of love, faith, and devotion to family will be cherished always.
A visitation to honor Velma will be held at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, on February 16, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral service will follow on February 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. She will be laid to rest privately next to her Husband at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Following the funeral service, a luncheon will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, 250 S. Indiana Avenue, Crown Point, IN 46307, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
