Virginia Louise Cox

In loving memory of Virginia Louise Cox.
Virginia Louise Cox (née Kempf) passed away peacefully on Sunday November 21, 2021 in Munster, Indiana. She was 98.
She is survived by three daughters and three sons: Thomas Francis Kopacz of Washougal, Washington, Nanci Louise Cieslak of Munster, Charles Michael Kopacz of Phoenix Arizona, Mary Lou Kopacz of Homewood, Illinois, Virginia Marie Kopacz of Teddington, United Kingdom, and Michael John Kopacz of Munster. She also is survived by three step-children, Georgia Cox, Benjamin Cox, and Steven Cox, and two grandchildren, Katherine Kopacz and Clara Kopacz. In addition, she is survived by six step-grandchildren: Robert Taylor, Carrie Mau, Jannah Cox, Nathan Cox, Danielle Cox, and Joshua Cox and one great step-grandchild,.
She is preceded in death by her daughter Louise Ann Kopacz, her second husband Leon Eugene Cox, and her brother Thomas Kempf.
Virginia was born in Harvey, Illinois on October 4th 1923 to Thomas Michael and Ethyl Mildred Kempf. She was a graduate of Thornton Township High School and received her nursing degree from Purdue University Calumet Campus.
Virginia was a life-long music lover. She played the piano, listened to classical music almost exclusively, and sang in choral group with The Notables for 25 years. She was also a member of TOPS Club, a weight control group.
After raising her seven children, Virginia made the heroic decision to pursue a life-long dream of becoming a nurse by returning to college mid-life to pursue this dream. She worked the rest of her career as a hospital RN, first as a psychiatric nurse at Our Lady of Mercy in Dyer, later as a med-surg nurse at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, and finally retiring as a pediatric nurse from St Catherine’s Hospital in East Chicago.
Virginia enjoyed a life-long interest in anthropology and archaeology which she shared with her second husband, Leon Cox. She also enjoyed a weekly cribbage game with her dear friend, Lee Hasse.
A Memorial Gathering will be held Sunday November 28th, 2021 from 1:00-3:00 PM at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 8178 Cline Avenue Crown Point, IN.
Virginia will be laid to rest privately by the family at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN.
