Eugene Earnest Bloom went home to be with the Lord on his 83rd birthday, April 17, 2016. He reunited with his wife of 60 years, JoAnn, after being separated upon her passing 11 days prior. Born to John and Earnestine Bloom on April 17, 1933, Gene grew up in Oklahoma City and graduated from Central High School. He studied accounting at Blackwood Business College. It was there that he met the love of his life, JoAnn White. Gene and JoAnn were married on August 27, 1955. They lived in Oklahoma City, Arkansas, and Ohio until making their final home in Plano, TX in 1986. Gene and JoAnn were blessed with two sons, Kevin and Keith.
Gene served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from 1951 to 1953. Gene worked for Remington Rand and then Local Federal Savings and Loan. He helped transition the company from paper to a computerized system. Gene then worked for NCR Corporation as a systems analyst for various financial institutions, computer data exhibitor, and instructor.
Upon retirement, Gene started an auto repair service from his home fixing vehicles for family and friends regardless of their ability to pay. Rarely was there a mechanical issue that he could not repair. Gene also volunteered countless hours as a hospital chaplain for the Medical Center of Plano.
Gene was intelligent, jovial, loving, and kind, with a ready chuckle. He was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. One had to be careful wondering out loud around Gene. A simple "I wonder how that's made" would evoke a 30 minute detailed disquisition regarding the topic. He enjoyed hot air balloons and volunteered as a balloon chaser at the Plano Hot Air Balloon Festival for several years. Gene was also an avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
John 3:16-17 were Gene's favorite Bible scriptures. He never passed up an opportunity to share the Good News with the world.
John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Gene is survived by his son, James Keith Bloom of Eufaula, OK; brother, Robert "Bob" and Dorothy "Gerrie" Bloom, of OKC, OK; and numerous nieces and nephews. His wife, JoAnn Bloom; son, Kevin Bloom; brother and sister-in-law, Donald "Don" and Betty Bloom; a baby sister; and his parents greeted him in heaven.
Funeral and interment services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City, OK on April 21, 2016 at 3 pm. A Memorial Celebration will be held at Bethany Bible Church in Plano, TX, date and time to be announced.
Arrangements under the direction of Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, Dallas, TX.
