Joan B. Galbraith was born on November 27, 1936, in Alliance, Ohio, the daughter of J.B. and Mary Hunt Blumenstiel. She graduated from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Publication. In 1960, Joan married James Nelson Galbraith, Jr. and began her career at a book publishing company in Boston before becoming a devoted and loving mother to her two daughters and then moving to Dallas. In 1982, Joan returned to school to earn her certification as a medical assistant and worked for both surgical and ophthalmological offices. She later worked in office administration at a Montessori school and ultimately dedicated herself to caring for her two cherished grandchildren who affectionately called her “Grammy."
Joan enjoyed serving her community through volunteering at her children's and grandchildren's schools, as well as with organizations such as the Northwood Women’s Club, Plano Symphony Guild, North Dallas Encore, and Simmons College.
Known for her positive spirit, warm heart, and sparkling smile, Joan loved traveling, sharing lunches with friends, and spending as much time as she could with her family—especially her beloved grandchildren and granddogs. She was a constant source of encouragement for her family, co-workers and friends, and maintained her optimism as she fought gallantly and became a breast cancer survivor.
Joan passed away peacefully on November 29, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer McManaman and her husband, David; and Gillian Bramlett, her husband, Matt, and their children, Kate and Charlie Bramlett; her granddogs, Luna, Chip, and Winnie; and many dear friends. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Any donations may be made in Joan’s honor to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, or Dallas Animal Services. A celebration of her life will take place in 2026.
