Judy was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and educator. She was born on March 3, 1943 to William John Grover and Maxine Shelton Grover in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She graduated from Scripps College in Claremont California with a B.A. in social studies and French. Always the learner, she got her master’s degree from the University of North Texas in reading and her doctorate degree of philosophy from Texas Woman’s University in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis in reading and administration. On July 16, 1966 she married Stephen Andrew Gasser in an intimate ceremony at First Methodist Church in Palo Alto, California.
Dr. Judith (Judy) Grover Gasser was a force to be reckoned with. She was a lifelong learner who advocated for the best literacy education for children in the state of Texas. She instilled the love of reading into everyone she met and taught. She was a beloved professor of literacy education at Texas Woman’s University. Whether her students were young readers at elementary schools or university students, she took them all under her wing and guided them to become better students, educators, and professionals. Each student who crossed her path was seen as an individual, with her/his own needs and learning styles. She believed that there was no one-size-fits-all type of learning, and she was committed to ensure every individual student was provided the most appropriate instruction.
Judy is predeceased in death by her loving husband, Stephen Andrew Gasser, and her beloved daughter-in-law, Lourdes Gasser. Judy is survived by her two children, Michael Gasser and Deborah (Debbie) Gasser Janssen, and her son-in-law, Steven (Tony) Janssen, as well as her three wonderful grandchildren, Andrew Janssen, Bryan Janssen, and Jasmine Gasser.
Debbie and Michael are grateful for Judy’s love and support of their families. Judy’s home was always open to her children and grandchildren for family meals, swimming in the pool and swinging in the tree swing. Her home was full of beautiful books that were shared with everyone big and small. Judy led by example. She never stopped learning. She was always striving to be the best mother, grandmother, and educator she could be. She pushed us all to be the best version of ourselves, and she will be greatly missed.
