Norman E. Stephens was born December 18, 1933 in Parsons, Kansas of parents H. A. (Steve) and Pearl Stephens. His siblings were Marjorie and Vernon who have both passed. Norm is survived by wife, Joyce, sons Michael and James, daughters-in-law Kathy and Pam, grandchildren Stephanee, Matthew, Cole (Nicole), and Kyle (Anissa), great grandchildren Noah, Jonah, Elizabeth, Everett and Norah, sisters-in-law June Regan and Kay Stephens, many nieces, and nephews. Norm loved his family, and they loved him.
Norm lived in Parsons, Kansas for 20 years. On February 14, 1954, he married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Bolinger. They were married 69 years. They moved to Texas in 1957, where Norm worked at Texas Instruments for 34 years. Eventually they moved to Plano in 1962.
Norm excelled in sports and was a four-sport letterman in High School and Junior College. He discovered senior slow pitch softball after retirement. He and Joyce traveled to many states for softball tournaments. They called team members their Ball Family. Norm was good at all games, especially Bridge and Monopoly. He amazed everyone at how fast he totaled numbers.
Norm was a member of First United Methodist Church Plano for 60 years, serving as Youth Counselor on all Junior and Senior Snow Skiing trips. Many of our youth learned to ski with Norm’s help, as he was an avid skier. He was known as the Yardbird who edged all church grounds.
A Celebration of Life for Norm will be held on Saturday, July 29, at 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of FUMC Plano. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to First United Methodist Church Plano or your favorite charity.
