Mrs. Johnson was born February 11, 1922 in Prattsville, Ar. She grew up doing farm work, mainly picking cotton. When WWII broke out, she, her mother and sisters worked in a civil defense plant in Little Rock, Ar. making bombs. In 1944, she joined the Navy and served as a hospital corpsman until the end of the war. The greater part of her adult life was spent being a good mother to her children and working in the church. She especially enjoyed playing gospel music on the piano and working with young people. In her 60's she joined the work place again, serving as curator of the DeQuincy Railroad Museum and an agent for the Continental Trailways bus station there. Later she worked part-time for the Louisiana Tourist Bureau at the information center on I-10 welcoming travelers to Louisiana and telling them about the state she'd come to love. At age 89, she joined her fellow veterans when she became a resident at the Southwest Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jennings, La. After spending one year and three months there, making new friends and enjoying her new found status as an honored veteran, she passed away in her sleep on August 29, 2012.
She is predeceased by 2 husbands, Robert Thompson of Georgia and Lee Johnson of Louisiana; 2 sisters, Emma Marcantel and Virgie Badon; 1 daughter, Pamela Zorn. She is survived by 2 daughters, Miriam Thompson and Tammy Cline; 3 grandsons and 2 great-grandchildren.
