She was born September 16, 1935 to Ernie and Marguerite Shafley in DeWitt, MI. She spent her entire life touching the lives of others in her hometown of DeWitt. Charlene married her high school sweetheart, Bill Schaar on June 11, 1955. Together they raised their sons and grandchildren in the DeWitt community. Charlene was an active member of Redeemer United Methodist Church where she served the Lord in many ways. Her faith was ever present in the way she lived her life. Charlene’s gift of service was well known through her 30 year career as a first grade teacher. Her passion was teaching but she taught more than academics, she taught others by example. She gave many hugs and pulled many teeth always with a gentle reminder of how much she cared. Charlene also graced many bleachers and auditoriums throughout her life. She enjoyed watching not only her sons and grandchildren, but many student/athletes over the years. She will long be remembered as a faithful fan. Charlene also found joy in traveling, sewing, quilting, and being with friends. She was blessed with a full, active life and was a blessing to many. Charlene is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Bill; sons, Dr. Mark (Mickie) Schaar; Mike (Luann) Schaar; and six grandchildren, Eric, Austin, Andrew, Anna, Christina, and Addison all of DeWitt. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Leonard (Felice) Shafley. A celebration of Charlene’s life will be held Tuesday, May 18 at 11:00 a.m. at Redeemer United Methodist Church, 13980 Schavey Road, DeWitt, MI, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
