On Tuesday September 21, 2021 David R. Schlegel went to live with his Lord and Savior after a valiant battle with illness. His firm belief in God and the love and support he received from family and friends, ultimately gave him peace as he took his last breath and went to his heavenly home.
David was born on June 22, 1941 in Lansing, Michigan to Carl and Wavel Ruch Schlegel. A graduate from Eastern High School, David went on to work in and eventually become the owner of the family sand and gravel business Carl Schlegel, Inc. On January 16, 1970, he married Shirley Lou Donn. David has three sons, David, Matthew and Mark and a son in heart Chad.
David had a passion for race cars and spent countless hours with friends and family being an instructor at high performance driving schools, driving with friends in Corvette road trips across the United States, fixing cars, or watching races. He also enjoyed traveling and had visited Alaska, Hawaii, China, Mexico and other states across our county. During the colder months, David, and his bride Shirley, would spend time in Anna Maria Island, and Key Largo Florida with family and friends enjoying warm weather, laughter, and good eats. On the rare occasion that he was idle, David could be found somewhere quiet with his nose buried in a novel. He was known for his generous heart, his jokes, quick wit, and occasional pranks.
David was preceded in death by his father Carl, and his mother Wavel. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, his 3 sons, David (daughters Danielle and Nicolle), Matthew (wife Kim, son Cody [wife Kali] daughter Sydney [husband Cory] and son Zach) and Mark [wife Shannon and daughter Madeleine], his son in heart, Chad [wife Marisol and children Bella and Dylan] and his sister Karen. David is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.
Family visitation will be held on Thursday September 30, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm and Friday October 1, 2021 at 9:30 a.m.
