Karl Kupsis, 72, of DeWitt, MI, formerly of Saginaw, MI, died February 17, 2016. He was born in Priekule, Latvia on December 21, 1943 to Fricis and Zenija (Berkis) Kupsis. Karl was very proud of his heritage and was active in his Latvian culture. A lifetime highlight for Karl and his family was a recent return visit to his homeland.
Karl was a passionate and loyal fan of all things related to the Michigan State Spartans (his alma mater), especially sports. He was also known by many to be a phenomenal cook and lover of all foods and for him, preparing and sharing food was love.
Karl could be a captivating story-teller. He had the uncanny ability to keep others engaged before ending with a great delivery. Perhaps the greatest attribute was how he’d always take the time to have a conversation with others. He truly had a unique aura about him. Along with his authentic personality and sense of humor, he had a memory that always left everyone in awe. While this is just the “tip of the iceberg” of a man who was loved dearly by all, there’s no doubt that Karl left an immense impact on those he came into contact with. But above all else, Karl would want people to know how deeply he cherished and loved his family and his quiet moments at home with them.
Karl was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Beth; daughter, Katherine (Brooks) Kincaid; son, Erik Kupsis; grandchildren, Vivian and Conrad Kincaid; brother Paul (Marianne) Kupsis and his children Christiene and Michi Kupsis; and one sister, Maija Kupsis and her children Lanny Howe and Evan (Nichole) Howe. He is also survived by several other beloved in-laws.
A funeral service will be held Monday, February 22, 2016 at 11:00 am at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, DeWitt Chapel with Rev. Dr. Harold DeMott officiating. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service and on Sunday, February 21, 2016 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the funeral home. Interment will follow at DeWitt Cemetery, DeWitt, MI.
Those desiring may make memorial donations in honor of Karl Kupsis to St. Vincent Home for Children Inc., 2800 W. Willow Street, Lansing, MI 48917 or Salvation Army, 525 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Lansing, MI 48912.
