I met Norm when Brendan and my son, Gavin Fritz hung out together when the boys were going to DeWitt schools. Whether I was dropping Gavin off or Norm was picking up Brendan, I always remember Norm being so kind. I am so very sorry for your loss, my sincerest condolences.

I met Norm in St.Johns Michigan as a Police Explorer in 1991. I had the privilege of riding with him and learning what the career was about. He was a wonderful mentor and friend.  I decided to join the military as law enforcement and he was my biggest fan with that decision. Kind, respectful and the epitome of service before self.  I am a better person for knowing him in every way. He will be so missed. My condolences to his wife, children and all those that loved him.

Norm was a generous, humorous, sweet, supportive, and caring man. He was a mentor to our son Jon, and demonstrated a deep love for his family and friends through his actions and kindness.  Our family had our best week ever with Norm and Brendan searching for Forrest Fenn’s Treasure in Yellowstone Park, and while we didn’t find gold we experienced an unforgettable adventure together.  Norm wasn’t a fisherman, buy we fished most days because that’s what our boys wanted.  He volunteered to drive due to my extreme fear of heights.  We laughed nonstop after he turned the headlights off and we drove in complete darkness while I screamed like a baby.  We attended his retirement party, but he couldn’t stop working as he wanted to serve and protect others. Thank you Norm for the sacrifices you made and for the goodness you brought into this world. Heartbroken to learn of Norm’s passing. He was one of the finest people I had the privilege of working with. Norm did a difficult job without ever losing his humanity  or sense of humor! Such a great person. My sincere sympathies to Norm’s family.

Such a great loss of an incredible person. I had the privilege of first knowing Norm as a student at NMU and then as a fellow police officer in Marquette/NMU. And then a few years later I was he and Oliver’s roommate for a couple months.  Then several years later, as luck would have it and we both had retired from our previous jobs, I was fortunate enough to work with him at the State Senate PD for a few months! Norm certainly had quite the wit and humor but could take a joke/rub as well as he could dish it out and always with the great big Norm smile; or was it actually a grin?
 RIP brother and “may perpetual light shine upon him and may his soul rest in eternal peace!”

We have all shared stories about Norm on what a kind and caring person he was.  I recall when he first started as I was in CSI and had been called in for a scene. I ended up working into my next shift. I went to line up and I was asked to take the new guy (Norm). We went to the parking lot and he was looking for the patrol car. I pointed to the CSI Station wagon, he was not so excited about that. 
I asked "Do you know the city boundaries?  He did not so, I drove him around the city limits.  I stopped and gave him the keys and let him drive. Again, he was not so excited about driving a station wagon. I admit I closed my eyes for a minute while he was talking to me. When I opened them up a minute later, I asked are we in the city limits he said I think so. We laughed about it and his whole career he never forgot about that. 
He learned a Spanish word "Mijo" (Son) which he always called me as I also called him that as well. Whenever, we saw each other that's how we greeted each other.
On my last day of work he approached me and said "Lt. you remember one of my first days I road with you? I said, of course you never let me forget it. lol.  He said, how about you come ride with me on your last day. Of course I did, but I was so touched by the request. He was a class act,

Norm was the unlucky investigator that seemed to get assigned all my cases that had a weird twist that needed to be investigated yesterday. Nothing phased him and he was also so cheerful.  He would check in regularly with what he had found, wishing me a great weekend, happy holiday etc.  

He also deeply loved his family.

Norm’s death was devastating to learn of. If you knew Norm, you can no doubt think of a million positive things to say about him. Patient, kind, supportive, hilarious. One of my favorite words for him was “brother”. Norm would show up on a moment’s notice and help in any way he could, not because he had to, but because he had unquestionably high moral character. Norm was the guy you hoped would always be around, someone who always went above and beyond. I’m so sorry for your loss. Norm was an amazing guy…

To his Family I never had the pleasure of meeting. I have no words to express how crushed I am for your family as well as his LE family. Everyone loved Norm. For years, Norm was almost the only Dog Handler I got on my calls. Oliver was a special dog with a special handler. Norm always treated me with respect, kindness and lacked the judgemental nature some Officers have. I was one of the Officers who spent my career getting broken. Bones, collapsed lung, blown out knees, etc. Norm was never the kind of person to treat people differently like some others. Oliver once bit me in the, let's say "rear quarters", while Norm, myself and Ofc Umholtz were forcing entry into a house. He was super remorseful until he realized, he didn't break skin and it was just simply hilarious and we laughed so hard we were practically crying. I also have a permanent reminder of Norm in that I was directly next to him when another dog came after Oliver on a call. I did not want to hit Norm so I could not fire. Norm was forced to and as close as I was, I sustained minor hearing damage in one ear. When Norm found out it he felt tried to apologize. I told him, nothing to apologize for and better he and Oliver were here rather than a small portion of my hearing. I loved Norm as I do all those that treated me like a person. God always takes the good ones. The best ones. And Norm was truly one of the best of us. I'm so sorry. God Bless. Retired LPD R Tucker

I worked with Norm at LPD.  Great Guy, Great Cop and a Great Loss!  Condolences to his family!

The first time I met Norm was on a traffic stop on Lakeshore Blvd in Marquette. He was heading home from his Chocolay Twp PD and I was with MPD. It was 3:00 AM and I knew he was a cop. Lol. He was speeding so I reminded him the limits. He thought I was a dick!  Lol. We worked together for years both at Marquette and then at Lansing. We knew how each other thought and what to do when we encountered the idiots. We broke a couple doors down chasing the idiots too. lol. I recall one chase when Norm face planted the driver on the pavement. When he stood up we asked him why he was bleeding 🩸?  Lol. Bad Norm. I recall one thanksgiving at my house Norm brought the salad…. enough to feed the entire department for a week. He also brought the Greek dressing….a gallon jug. He had a hook up at Alexander’s restaurant and took complete advantage. Lol. When he needed a break from Oliver he’d call and yes I had a police dog for the weekend. Oliver and I got along great. Probably better than Norm. lol. R.I.P. my friend you will be missed. Julie and kids know your husband and father was a great officer and friend. Lots of laughs and some crying too. He had an emotional side that not many saw. Life is funny sometimes in the ups and downs but know he lived his best life and you 3 were the center of his universe. Loved him.

I've known Norm through my employment with Michigan State Police and also Michigan Orthopedic Center.  For several years Norm assisted in providing our staff at MOC with personal protection training.  He was an awesome man and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.  My thoughts and prayers to Julie and his children.

There is a limit of 2000 characters in this memory. How could one ever recognize the memory or impact Norm had on me within that limit?  If you heard me speak at Norms K9 retirement , I paraphrased President Reagan saying “Most men go through life wondering if they made a difference. Norm didn’t have that problem!” We tore the roof off that gymnasium  recognizing his K9 career and standing up for what was right ! Life is not marked by the number of years you were here , but by the impact you had and left . Norms legacy is eternal and colossal . Norm was a great man, a great husband , a great father , and my brother . Norm and I stood together side by side every night  trying to make a difference on the streets. We stood shoulder to shoulder and tried to make great families. But Norm stood ALONE  on the impact he left on us all ! Try not to be upset that he is no longer with us , but be grateful you had the chance to meet him and be changed by him forever. Hold your love ones close, and tell them you love them each and every time you are near them . Live every day as though it is your last , because you never know what the future holds. Try to live like Norm . It has been said that “Suffering is reliving pain, and grief is relieving pain.”  Grief is the price we are all forced to pay with our love  of Norm .  Grieve now , but pick yourself up , redistribute ammo , reload , and stay in the fight ! This is what Normy would have wanted .

I met Norm about two years ago when I started working with him at the State and I was immediately impressed by how engaging, authentic and friendly he was.

His smile always provided warmth and his no-nonsense / common sense approach to the job  is something each of us can aspire to. He was a great partner and a wealth of wisdom.

After my wife passed away this summer, he would frequently check in with me to see how things were going for me and the kids and it was then that I really learned how large his heart was. We work remote, but the miles between us didn’t matter.  Oh, and his sense of humor was always top notch. With his suggestion, we utilized AI to have some fun with our manager, if you see a 2026 calendar floating around in his office, please understand that that was all Norm‘s idea. 😊

I was so honored to be able to hang out with him on Tuesday at the Work party and I’m very thankful I was able to grab this photo of us with a couple coworkers. 

Norm loved big and he will always be appreciated, thank you for sharing him with me.

We were deeply saddened to hear about the loss of our dear friend Norm. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Julie, Brendan, and Kaylie and to all who had the distinct pleasure of knowing him.  He will truly be missed, as there are few individuals that made such a huge impact on people’s lives like Norm did. Our friendship goes WAY back!  We used to meet up at the border (Sheridan Rd and Turner) where we would catch up and share stories about the escapades of our young and early careers.  I always admired his self deprecating sense of humor!  Norm was one of the few that whenever his name came up in conversation it was always followed up with comments like: Man he’s such a great guy!  We hadn’t seen each other in a couple of years, but just last week Wednesday we ran into each other and exchanged a hug, caught up on our families and made sure we still had each other’s phone numbers. He was SO proud to tell me all about his kids and their college lives.  To say that I am thankful to have been able to see him before he passed is such understatement!  You were one of the best Norm and you are already greatly missed!

My wife Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by Norm’s passing.  He is one of the nicest people I ever met.  I will have many fond memories of Norm.  He was genuine and a downright good person.  Our prayers go out to his whole family.

Naimy family, I'm so very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure  of working with Norm on occasion in his LPD days when I was a child abuse investigator.  He was a consummate professional and always treated us CPS workers as equals. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I had the privilege of being one of Norm's FTOs when he came to LPD. From the first day, I knew training him was going to be more like having a partner than a trainee. Norm was so incredibly humble and I never had to rein in any ego with him. In fact, I would watch him read my lengthy DORs (Daily Observation Reports) which typically had 1 or 2 small things he could have done differently. I'd watch him taking it very seriously and blaming himself. I'd have to point out to him that it was a 4 page DOR and he only had 1 or 2 things he maybe could have done better and no one will ever be perfect. Norm really wanted to do the right thing and be the best officer he could be. I was later his Sergeant and he was one of my go-to officers. If it was a questionable sutuation where I wanted an officer who I could trust, Norm was that guy. There aren't many officers who I can say that I never heard anyone complain about but Norm was that guy. We all would do the Cheers "Norm!" greeting when he came in the room because we all absolutely loved him. He was truly just someone who cared about everyone and we need more of that in this world.

I’ve been friends with Norm since 1992.  A great person is an understatement. I’m going to miss our conversations and making each other laugh. Rest easy brother. Thoughts and prayers to Julie and the kids.

My sincere condolences to Normy's family.  I was one of his first FTO's at LPD and later his supervisor.  I knew he would be a star.  What a great man with compassion and caring for everyone.  I will never forget the many laughs we had.  I will truly miss that smile and his keen wit. Norm always teased us that we named our son Norman after him and would ask “How’s my namesake doing” each time he saw us. He was full of life and usually full of “it” which just made me love him even more. He was an amazing police officer, friend, and overall human and will be dearly missed.  My prayers and love go out to his family.
