He was born September 12, 1923 to Russell and Irene Raymer. He enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He served on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Hornet, working as a fireman. He was honorably discharged after contracting tuberculosis, for which he was treated in Battle Creek for more than a year before rejoining his family.
While on leave during the war, Russell rushed home to marry his neighbor and long-time sweetheart, Wilma (Bayn) Raymer on April 1, 1943. Together they raised five boys and made their home in many places including Battle Creek, Springport, Dimondale, Ohio, DeWitt and Lansing.
He retired from General Motors in 1989 and also operated Raymer’s Welding in Lansing from 1973 until 1997.
He was a loyal member of Wayside Chapel Church. He enjoyed his motorcycle and golf, playing it especially, but also watching it on television.
More than anything, he loved his family.
He survived by his wife of 71 years, Wilma; sons, Phil (Nancy) Raymer, Russell (Connie) Raymer III, John (Teresa) Raymer, Ralph (Valerie) Raymer, and Mark (Valerie) Raymer; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; extended family; and church family.
He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Nancy; brother, Ralph; sister-in-law, Joy; and sisters, Marsha and Judy.
Special thanks to Russell and Connie Raymer for providing many years of care and love. A memorial service will take place in the future. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are asked to donate to Wayside Chapel, 518 N College Rd, Mason, MI 48854, or Hospice Advantage, 801 S. Waverly, Suite 304, Lansing, MI 48917. The family is being served by Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes DeWitt Chapel.
