Mike was born February 13, 1937 in Berlin, New Hampshire, to Germaine and Philip Brassard. He was the eldest of 5 children and is survived by his sisters Emily & Annette, his children, Delina, Michelle, and Philippe, and his grandson, Logan. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Armand and Rev. Fr. Leo Brassard, and his ex-wife and mother of his children Willa Mae Brassard.
During grammar school, Mike worked in his father’s grocery store. He graduated high school from Assumption Prep in Berlin, MA and briefly attended Georgetown University. After deciding college wasn’t for him, he mailed his clothes back home and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1956. He served as an aircraft electrical technician and was stationed in Paris Island, SC and Okinawa, Japan. Due to the Cuban Missile Crisis he was transferred to El Toro, CA. Following his honorable discharge from the military in 1962, Mike decided to stay in CA. He worked for a variety of businesses, including Fuller Brush, Sanicare, and Sears Roebuck. In 1967, while still working at Sear's, he sold land plots in California City for Great Western. He then moved on to work for Sal Occhipiniti Real Estate Unlimited in Lakewood and was briefly part owner of Bellflower Realty. While working at Sears he met Willa Mae Talley. They were married from 1969 to 1979 and had three children. Though Mike and Willa divorced, they continued to raise their two daughters and one son together and remained good friends until Willa’s last day. She passed earlier this year. Around 1968, Mike started MGB Services Inc. a janitorial business that later changed focus to real estate investment. He and Willa bought their first investment property in Bellflower with money they saved together. They remained investment partners their whole lives. Willa quipped that they made bad husband and wife, but good business partners. Mike bought and managed properties for over 30 years. In addition to his entrepreneurial spirit, Mike valued a life of religious and community service. Mike was an active member of the Bellflower community at one point serving as Mayor of Bellflower and President of the Bellflower Chamber of Commerce. He also served as a Bellflower Noon Lions Club Member for 37 years and was elected to be 4L2 District Lions Club Governor in 2007. His hobbies included singing in the Bellflower Civic Chorus, gardening, golfing, and caring for his many cats, bunnies, and birds.
Funeral services will be Saturday Dec. 28, 2019 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Bellflower, CA. Rosary at 11am, Mass at noon, and reception to follow. Family requests that attendees wear blue, Mike’s favorite color.
