Obituary of Gertrude Adele Stevanovic
It is with great sadness that the family of Gertrude Stevanovic announces her passing, at the age of 95, on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023. Predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Radisav. Much loved mother of Doris Stevanovic and Tara Collington; dear mother-in-law to Peter Mascher and Philip Collington; dearest Oma to Emma and Lucy. Born in Vienna, Austria, Gertrude immigrated to Canada and started a new life, first working in the Unemployment Insurance Office and then for over 25 years as a dietician at the Mountain Sanatorium (Chedoke Hospitals). She and her husband Radi immensely enjoyed their time spent together at the cottage on Lake Erie near Dunnville. It was their favourite place and they named it “Vila Ravijojla”, a play on words. A wonderful cook, baker, and seamstress, Gertrude also loved her houseplants and gardening. She was a thoughtful and selfless person, and a kind and generous friend and neighbour. Gertrude was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to a wide variety of music, especially Viennese songs. Fiercely independent, she lived alone in her condo on Creekside Drive until the day before her death. She will miss her balcony. The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude to the staff of Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas. Our warmest thanks to PSW Cathy Garrity for her loving and compassionate care. Deepest appreciation to cardiologist Dr. Allan Kitching and the many specialists at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, who cared expertly for Gertrude over the years. A visitation for Gertrude will be held on Sunday, April 2nd, 2023, from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, at Marlatt Funeral Home, Swackhamer Chapel, 195 King Street West, Dundas, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 PM. Memorial donations may be made in Gertrude’s name to Margaret’s Place Hospice, 170 Ogilvie St., Dundas, https://sjv.on.ca/hospice/
