Joan Elizabeth MacDougall

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Elizabeth MacDougall age 83 after a lengthy journey with cancer. She will be forever loved and missed by her husband of 63 years, David MacDougall.

Joan was the much-adored mother of Dianne Hicks (Rob Hicks) and Cathy Leeming (Bob Leeming) and cherished grandmother to Caitlyn Hicks (Jonah Tassie), Rebecca Hicks (Jeremy Parsons), Brittany Hicks (John Curtis), Ryan Leeming (Katie Shaughnessy) and Alexandra Leeming. Loving great-grandmother to Annabelle and Rosalie Tassie, Genevieve Parsons and Emilia Leeming.

Predeceased by great-grandsons Caden and Bryson Curtis, her parents Vern and Pauline Maxwell and brothers Tom and Bruce Maxwell.

Joan grew up in Toronto with fond memories of her family cottage in Brocks Beach. Joan and Dave’s journey began in 1961. Together they raised their two daughters, were devoted to extended family, enjoyed the arts with friends, embarked on many careers, and relentlessly pursued knowledge and life-long learning. They travelled extensively, visiting 58 countries and approaching life with adventurous spirit. Joan loved oil painting, caring for her extensive gardens, and spoiling her many beloved pets. In later years they generously gave time and energy to the Dundas Historical Society and pursued their favourite mutual hobby, genealogy. Most importantly they prioritized each other and their family.

Those who knew Joan will remember her gentle nature, her playful humour, her love of animals and her kind heart. May we all enjoy some of those qualities in our own lives!

Visitation will be held at the Marlatt Funeral Home “Swackhamer Chapel”, 195 King Street West, Dundas on Friday, August 1st, 2025 from 11am – 2pm. A funeral service will follow in the Marlatt Chapel at 2pm. Cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to the SPCA are welcome.
