Margaret Smith

Margaret Stewart Smith (nee Crawford), born on July 22, 1934 in Glasgow, Scotland has passed away peacefully with her family by her side on June 13, 2022 in Dundas, Ontario after battling several long illnesses.

Rea (as she was known by friends and family) could be described as a little “cheeky” having a quick wit and dry sense of humour. She loved to entertain family and friends and subject them her good-humoured cheekiness. However, she was also exceptionally intuitive and could always read the mood of anyone she dealt with and adapted her style as required.

She married Alan Smith in 1956 and they spent 13 years in Glasgow, becoming parents of four children. The family then moved to Dundas, Ontario in 1969. Her outgoing personality was quickly embraced by the Highland Hills neighbourhood. She would regularly enrol in local night school class with her friend Vivienne Humphreys where they’d engage in back-of-the-classroom boisterous behaviour. When she reached her 70s her bucket list included being in a protest march, smoking weed, getting a tattoo and riding a motorcycle.

She could make anyone laugh. When she would tell people to call her “Rea” she would then tutor them in the correct pronunciation by saying “like diarrhoea” and the conversation would immediately become funny and refreshing. She particularly enjoyed trying to make healthcare professionals convulse in laugher as they treated her.

She was one-of-a-kind and will be sorely missed by anyone that knew her.

She is survived by Alan her husband of 66 years; children, Laurence (Mona), Russell, Pauline (Lee), Crawford; grandchildren, Rose Ackerman, Charles Ackerman, Coralie (Ed) Salesse-Smith. Preceding her in death was her father, James Walker Crawford; mother, Agnes Drummond Finlay; brothers, James (Marian) Crawford and Robert (Margaret) Crawford.

A service will be held at the Marlatt Funeral Home, 195 King St W, Dundas, Ontario on June 23, 2022 at 1:00pm followed by interment at the Grove Cemetery in Dundas.
