July 24, 1929, - December 16, 2025
Passed away peacefully at Idlewyld Manor. Margery was predeceased by her beloved husband of 53 years John. Loving mother of Anne (Chris Newman), John (Jennifer) and Sue (George Mahler). A loving Nana who always enjoyed time with her 8 grandchildren, Mathew Newman (Stephanie), Jennifer Newman (Will Cowlin), Sarah, Mitchell and Russell Cuddie, Jessica Mahler (Anthony Coppolino) Katherine Mahler (Christian Zimmer) and Mark Mahler. Great Nana to Ryn and Lane Cowlin, Hudson and Archie Newman, Conrad Zimmer and Nolan Coppolino. Born in Hamilton, Margery and her amazing single mom, Florence, spent many happy times with her Aunt Margery (Madge) and Uncle Frank Bryans and her cousins, William Bryans (d Dundas) and Barbara Braithwaite (d North Vancouver). For many years, she and her mom went to opening day at the CNE, travelled to Toronto to buy an Easter hat and spent a summer week in Port Dover or Port Elgin.
After working at Eames Department store for a year she attended TMU (Ryerson) and studied Retail Management. Margery was a Delta cheerleader, and John was a Westdale football player, but it was not until they both returned from their post-secondary education that their romance began. Always a good sport willing to try new adventures they enjoyed travelling and both learned to ski when they were over 40. As parents, they took their children on ski holidays and car trips to the west and east coast. Marge and John also vacationed and travelled with their RHLI friends. Dubbed the “Nassau Gang” after 10 years of holidaying on Paradise Island, this group of 5-6 couples traveled to Jamaica, Greece and the annual Collingwood weekend in September to celebrate their wedding anniversary. For 13 years she and John spent two months at Flora in Indian Shores FL. While they enjoyed their beach walks, they especially appreciated annual visits from their children and grandchildren. Margery loved dogs and over the years walked Tammy, Chimo, Sheba and Keeo along the black path always making time to greet people and let little ones pat her dog. Marge and John enjoyed Theatre Aquarius, the Hamilton Golf & Country Club and had a long association with Central Presbyterian Church.
A widow for over 20 years, she provided support and guidance to her many friends as they entered this phase of their lives. She loved being a mom, a Nana and a Great-Nana. Special thanks to PSW’s Antonella, Alisia and Lindsay who helped her stay in her home for many years. We also wish to thank the staff at Idlewyld Manor from the administrators to the kitchen staff. The Orchard View staff continually cared for Margery with dedication and compassion and provided tremendous support to our whole family especially during this last week. There will be a private family service and interment. A celebration of life for Margery will be arranged in April. Memorial donations to Neighbour to Neighbour, Special Olympics, Central Presbyterian Church or Idlewyld Manor Charity would be greatly appreciated.
