June 20, 1920 – January 1, 2013.
“Together Again” with her adored husband, Harold Leonard Mitton [August, 1988] and her precious youngest daughter, Elizabeth Ellen [February 10, 2012]. Teresa died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Villa, Dundas in her 93rd year with family by her side and surrounded by the love of all her children. Left to grieve until we meet again are Michael [Myrtle], Janice [Peter], Kathryn Miski [Mike], Judith Kochanka [Tomas], Pauline, and James [Paula]. Grandmother to 20 beautiful children and great-grandmother to 5 gorgeous little ones. Survived by her sisters, Helene MacDonald and Mary Bennett and her sister-in-law Eleanor Mitton as well as many, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Joseph Daniel and Bridget Searson as well as her brothers Ellard [WW II casualty], James, Ambrose, Patrick, and Daniel, and her sister Carmel. Fondly remembered by her good friends Polly Brown, Rita Casuccio, and Rita and Manfred Jansen as well as her friends at St. Joseph’s Estates and at Cedar Grove, St. Joseph’s Villa.
Thank you to our special angels of caring: granddaughter Hilary Borndahl, family friend Theresa Wilkinson, and Doina, Sally, Sarah and Maria who ministered so lovingly to mom, and to those individual staff members at St. Joseph’s Villa who always found time, affection, and an extra smile for her.
Teresa left the tiny hamlet of Douglas, ON and graduated with her Registered Nursing diploma from Brockville Hospital School of Nursing in 1941. She nursed at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto and Homewood Hospital, Guelph. She then moved to Hamilton to continue her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Shortly after she met the man of her dreams. Teresa and Harold [‘Bus’] married on Christmas Day, 1945. Teresa continued to work, including stints in employee health [P&G], infectious diseases [Hamilton General Hospital], private duty, and Chedoke Sanatorium until the greater demands and roles of motherhood and housewife became her main focus. She always loved her piano and played tunes right up to the time she entered the Villa. Just a few of Teresa’s many gifts were her patience, her great faith, her love of family, her unending care and concern for her children, and her spontaneous and unpredictable sense of humour.
Visitation at Marlatt Funeral Home “Swackhamer Chapel”, 195 King St. W., Dundas, on Friday, January 4th from 2-4 & 6-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 5th in the chapel at St. Joseph’s Villa, 56 Governor’s Road, Dundas. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Burlington.
As our mother’s life was so negatively affected by an inherited mental health condition in her earlier and final years, the family would appreciate donations to St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, West 5th Campus, Hamilton, ON in lieu of flowers.
