

Dr. William (Bill) Vernon Prestwich, affectionately called “Professor” by the caring staff at Birch Trail in St. Joseph’s Villa, passed away on November 12, 2025, at the age of 87. A beloved educator, scientist, and father, Bill was born in Toronto on April 21, 1938. He dedicated his life to the pursuit and sharing of knowledge, touching the lives of students, colleagues, and loved ones alike.
As a professor of physics for nearly four decades, Bill inspired generations of students to explore the world of radiation physics and its vital applications in health and medicine. He earned his PhD in Nuclear Physics from McMaster University in 1963 and was a pioneering researcher in radiative transport, dosimetry, and microdosimetry. His collaborative work with the Hamilton Regional Cancer Centre contributed significantly to advancements in medical physics. Bill held the title of Professor Emeritus of Interdisciplinary Science and Radiation Sciences, reflecting his lasting influence and dedication to his field.
Beyond academia, Bill enjoyed tending his garden, loving animals, and taking long walks with his dogs, which brought him peace and joy throughout his life. His warmth, curiosity, and mentorship left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline. He is survived by his children, John (Jennifer), Debbie (Blair), and Tim; his eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Bill’s legacy endures through his contributions to science, his kindness to those around him, and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered with affection.
