John W. McMartin, 87, of East Hartford, beloved husband for 65 years of Jean Mae (Bissonette) McMartin, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. Born in Plattsburgh, NY on August 15, 1933, he was the son of the late James and Helen (Byrnes) McMartin. John was a proud veteran of U.S. Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War and earning a Purple Heart. He worked for Pratt & Whitney for 35 years, starting as a tool and die maker, and finishing as program manager for international sales. He was a longtime, faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church in East Hartford and a member of the Men’s Club. He enjoyed helping to run St. Mary’s bingo and cheering on the UConn Women’s Basketball team. Most of all, he was a devoted family man. John and Jean enjoyed their place in Stowe, VT and cherished many adventures hiking and skiing with friends and family.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, John will be forever missed by his wife Jean; two daughters, Julie Rogers and husband John of Norwich, CT and Jamie Bissonette-Lewey and husband Newell of Pembroke, ME and his five granddaughters, Jennie Rogers, Sarah Ferro, Katherine Startz, Emily Tyson-Jorgenson and Erika Farnlof. He is also survived by his sister, Maryanne Rector, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Ronald Rector and brother, Phillip McMartin. Special thanks to the hospice team who helped him through this final journey.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at Silver Lane Cemetery, 1280 Silver Lane, East Hartford.
